Where dogs aren't allowed
- Beaches and rock pools. Randwick Council bans dogs from all its beaches and rock pools, including Coogee and Clovelly. Waverley bans dogs from Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama beaches, the intertidal areas and ocean pools (including Bronte Baths).
- Bondi Park is on-lead only.
- Within 10 m of children's play equipment, and food preparation or eating areas. This is NSW law, and it applies inside off-leash parks too.
- Sports fields when in use, and in many parks the playing surface at any time.
- Bushland and wildlife areas, such as Centennial Park's Bird Sanctuary and York Road Bushland, Randwick's bush reserves, and the bush sections of Bronte and Tamarama gullies (stay on the paths).
- In Centennial Parklands: no dogs at Tramway Oval or Kippax Lake Field, and dogs on a lead inside Grand Drive, in Fearnley Grounds and within 10 m of ponds.
The rules everywhere
- Four dogs, maximum. Under the NSW Companion Animals Act (s 13), a dog isn't under effective control if the person has more than 4 dogs, and the off-leash exemption only applies with 4 or fewer. That's why our groups never go above 4 dogs per walker.
- Effective control. Off-leash still means under control: your dog should come back when called.
- Pick up after your dog. Councils fine people who don't.
- Registration and microchipping. In NSW, dogs must be microchipped and registered on the NSW Pet Registry by 12 weeks of age. Registration is a one-off lifetime fee.
- Restricted and dangerous dogs may never be off-leash.
